President Yudhoyono orders immediate rehabilitation of quake-hit Sorong
RESIDENT Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono called on the West Papua provincial government particularly the Sorong district administration to immediately carry out rehabilitation and construction in areas affected by earthquake on January 4.
He made the request after listening to explanation on the problem made by West Papua Governor Abrahan Octavianus Atururi here on Wednesday, Januari 21, 2009.
“After the stage of emergency response is done immediately conduct rehabilitation and reconstruction,” he said. President Yudhoyono said rehabilitation and reconstruction had to be done based upon good planning and in line with the planning.
“We have already had a system for it. Use the reference for budget use according to the system. If the damage cannot as yet be overcome using the local budget additional budget may be sought from provincial or national budgets,” he said.
The president also reminded the need to consider the price of goods in the province which was higher than in other places when calculating the budget for the rehabilitation and reconstruction. To the people he appealed to face the disaster rationally and would not link it with factors which are not rational and against religions.
On the occasion President Yudhoyono extended aid including school bags, biscuits, milk and household utensils received by two quake children representing all the victims.
He also gave Rp3 billion worth of cash to the administrations of Sorong district and mayoralty through the governor of West Papua.
Governor Atururi in his expose said that 82 tremors had occured in the region from January 4 to 21 in various magnitude and as a result four people had died and 509 others had been wounded including 31 who were seriously wounded.
The quake first struck on January 4 at 4.40am local time measuring 7.2 on the Richter Scale followed by another one at 7.33am local time measuring 7.6 on the Ricthter Scale.
He said the number of evacuees reached 17,499 when the quake first hit. The number had now dropped to 327 but the cost of material damage caused by the quake reached Rp985 billion, he said. (antara.co.id)
